We are proud to be designing Chapel on Water, the future landmark for the Mennonite Christian Hospital Shoufong Branch. For six decades, the Mennonite Christian Hospital (MCH) has been providing essential medical services to the remote Hualian County on the Taiwanese East coast. Shoufong Branch is MCH's new care community, to serve the elderly, dementia patients and to enhance medical accessibility. Chapel on Water, when it is complete, will not be only the focal piece of the community but also a significant building in the township.
As the name suggests, Chapel on Water will sit in the middle of a lake. The building can accommodate 500 people. The design, symbolising a 'tree of life', pays tribute to the late-gothic fan vault and resembles a branch structure. Around the building, the curvature of the roof lifts elegantly to reveal the entrance and other openings. Its shape, we believe, inherits natural beauty and fuses waterscapes and surrounding mountains into an integral scenery.
We are currently working closely with our collaborators to develop this structurally challenging architecture.
